Since I had to wash my brushes a few days ago, I thought that maybe I could share it with you.
It is always a hassle to wash brushes but it is a necessity! During constant use you build up makeup residue along with your skin cells and the bacteria have the freedom to thrive! Dirty brushes can cause a lot of irritation, to your face and your eyes, such as breakouts or even eye infections!
My personal brushes
I clean my brushes with a cleanser once a week or more, it depends on how frequent the use was.
And deep clean once a month.
My professional brushes
I clean my brushes after every client with a cleanser and spay them with 97% alcohol to disinfect.
Deep clean every evening, if of course I had clients that day.
What do I use to clean my brushes
When I clean my brushes after clients or my own brushes with a cleanser, I use a drugstore brush cleanser.
Some brushes that were used for waterproof makeup (gel liners, etc) or concealer and some bases, I clean first with my Waterproof makeup remover and then with the cleanser! I do this because the cleanser does not break down the waterproof makeup sufficiently and always leaves residue.
For deep cleaning my brushes I use Baby Shampoo and Extra Virgin Olive Oil!
Baby shampoo is not an aggressive type of wash that will ruin or dry out the bristles, so what is good for the baby's is good for my brushes ;)
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is used in a lot of cosmetic treatments, you can use it as makeup remover, in your daily masks and of course in your food. I use it because it keeps the bristles hydrated and soft but also to break down residue from brushes that were used for waterproof makeup, concealer, etc.
Cleaning Time
First of all I want to apologize for the pics with already used soaps and pads, while I was in the process of cleaning it came to me that maybe I should write a blog post about it :) Sorry for that!
I pour some shampoo and some oil in one bowl and in another shampoo with some water.
First I dip the brush in mixture of shampoo/oil to break down makeup residue and work that in the palm of my hands.
Then I dip it a couple of times in the second bowl with shampoo/water and clean them properly till I see no makeup.
Next to using my hand palm I also use this little Sigma sample of their brush cleaning glove, it comes handy :), I also use a pad with rubber bristles to clean the brushes deeper, I got it from Primark.
Important! Never wash your brushes with the bristles upwards, because you are letting the water and soap in, that can solve the glue of the brush handle and ruin them.
When I am sure that the brushes are really clean, then I rinse them off really well so that there is no soap left. I squeeze the remaining water out and lay them under an angle, with the bristles pointing down, to dry. Why? You do it because you are letting the water slide down out of the brushes to really dry well, otherwise the water will remain in the core of the brush where it can again solve the glue and even worse let them mold!!!
Let them dry for at least 24h to make sure that all the water is out, if they are still damp a bit, leave them a little bit longer!
So after all the hard work and wrinkled hands, your brushes are nice and clean again and smell like a baby ;)
